“Refugees are not defined by what they have lost, but by what they have the courage to rebuild.”

Our Story

UJUZI started in 2022 in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement, Uganda. It was founded by refugees who wanted to create real opportunities for their community—starting with skills training to help people rebuild their lives.

Without a facility of their own, they were renting an old building in very poor condition for €600 per year. The structure was leaky, the roof unstable, and the overall state dilapidated. Many buildings in the refugee camp are similarly old and deteriorated, so even with additional funds, finding a better one to rent is extremely difficult.

Still, the response was overwhelming. People came eager to learn tailoring, soap making, hairdressing, knitting, and English.

The first classes were full of energy, hope, and determination.

In just two years, UJUZI trained over 300 people, helped launch 20 small businesses, and created 30 jobs. Many learners now help others grow, giving back to the community.

In 2025, UJUZI built its first training centre. Now, we are expanding to a bigger space to welcome more learners, host trainers, and create even greater impact.

UJUZI means “skills” in Swahili—but to us, it means opportunity, dignity, and a better future built together.
